ANGELES CITY – “Between 30 to 90 minutes is crucial in saving a person who suffered from heart attack or aneurism.”
Thus said Dr. Elaine Payumo, one of the interventional cardiologists at the Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) of the Angeles University Foundation Medical Center (AUFMMC).
Payumo disclosed that their laboratory was established last November, the first functional Cath Lab in Pampanga.
AUF’s Cath Lab is in partnership with HB Calleja National Heart Institute.
“Somebody put up a Cath Lab before in the province but there were no patients so it failed to operate,” said Payumo.
She added that they now have 56 patients since the AUF Cath lab opened late last year.
Payumo said that AUFMMC Director Ma. Lourdes Lagunilla and other officials will have a re-launching of the Cath Lab on May 14 at the Holiday Inn Resort Hotel in Clark.
Payumo said the length of time and accuracy of the equipment is crucial in saving the life of a person.
“Why go to Manila when it’s far and more expensive. Traffic may also derail the patient’s chances of survival,” added Payumo.
She stressed that the laboratory uses the “best equipment” such as the Philips Integris Allura (Singe-Plane).
“Anything that has something to do with checking up veins is done here,” said Payumo, as she explains the function of the Cath Lab.
She said the usual check-ups such as thread mills, ECG and 2D echo “may have some errors and inaccuracy” but check-ups at the Cath Lab “are almost perfect, if not perfect.”
In interviews with medical experts, they said at least P70 million was spent to establish the Cath Lab at the AUFMMC. The Integris Allura costs about P30 million, they said.
Payumo also added that they also perform open heart surgery at the Cath Lab. She said Dr. Silvino Enrique Pineda heads the open heart surgery unit.
Desiree Lou Tuazon is the unit manager of the Cath Lab at the fourth floor of the AUFMMC.
