ANGELES CITY – “The governor acted faster considering her office is far from Porac. Shame on the town mayor and vice mayor.”

Thus said Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) Chairman Ruperto “Perto” Cruz as his group expressed gratitude to Gov. Lilia “Baby” Pineda for her support “to our call for the local government unit of Porac to cease issuing new business permits to piggery and poultry farms that have been polluting the environment.”

“With the news that your good self have directly communicated to Mayor Condralito de la Cruz and Vice Mayor Dexter David your concerns over the continuing operations of these erring poultry and hog farms in the face of the clear and present danger they pose on the health of the communities around them, our hopes have been renewed: that our 20-year suffering from the stench and flies will come to a definitive end,” added Cruz in a letter sent to the governor’s office on January 12.

Cruz said Pineda’s order to De La Cruz “makes everything moot and academic.”

“The town officials should adhere to Pineda’s order as she is the leader of the province,” said Cruz in a phone interview.

He added that 2nd district Rep. Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo should join the inspection of the piggeries in Porac “as that’s her district.”  Pineda and Arroyo are set to inspect some of the 18 prominent piggeries in the town.

“We are gladdened too that the Honorable Governor has likewise taken cognizance of the measures and technologies readily available to hog and poultry farms to control the flies and foul odor attendant to their operations,” Cruz said.

He also said that “the example of Magalang Mayor Romy Pecson’s farm which you cited in the news media, as well as the Aboitiz Farm in Tarlac, affirms that pollution can indeed be controlled, even eliminated, if the farms are compelled to, if the local government units exercised a strong political will.”

“The same political will your good self, Madame, are exercising in the governance of the province,” said Cruz, indicating that they will not go up against piggeries which will strictly follow environmental laws imposed by the government.

Pineda stressed that “all hog raisers in Porac should not operate because not a real monitoring had been done on them.”

Cruz, in the same letter, also asked Pineda and other provincial officials to join a meeting and dialogue with affected residents and investment areas severely affected by the pollution problem caused by the hog and poultry farms in Porac.

De La Cruz has yet to issue statements after calls had been made to her office.
