ANGELES CITY – Poracay Resort won the championship in the recent 6th Congressman “Tarzan” Lazatin invitational basketball open marked by emotional flare-ups that almost went awry.
At least 17 members of the Angeles police helped secure the deciding Game 2 of the best-of-three series last week as Poracay used end-game brilliance to beat Magalang Selection, 92-86.
In Game 1, Poracay was also steady down the stretch and won by a hairline, 89-88. League organizers led by Pancho Garcia and Joel Balingit had just enough experience to avoid violence between fans and players.
“This is our most challenging tournament. The reason for the high emotions is that the teams are well-balanced and games end close,” said Garcia.
Poracay anchored their flawless offense on National University (NU) Bulldogs star Alfie Grizaldo who was named most valuable player.
The team from nearby Porac received P60,000 for winning the championship. Magalang got the second prize pegged at P30,000. Third placer D.G. Cubacub received P10,000.
Dusty Ronquillo was named the most disciplined player, while Calvin Abueva the most improved player.
Officiated by the Mabalacat Referees Association (MRA) led by Pogi Castro, the open tournament is held annually at the L and S subdivision in barangay Sto. Domingo here.
