CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “My dream is to provide free college education to poor people.”

Thus said Nacionalista Party (NP) senatorial bet Atty. Adel Abbas Tamano during a press conference here yesterday.

A former university president of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Tamano said the government should prioritize education as it will have an “immediate positive effect” on the economy.

Tamano disclosed that in 1960, the government allotted at least 30 percent of the total national budget to education. From 2001 to 2008 under the leadership of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the government set aside at least 11 percent of the total budget for education.

Tamano said he will lobby for the allotment of more funds once he wins as senator.

Tamano said “it’s not a mere dream but a reality” to provide free college education. He added that as PLM president, they were able to provide 10,000 scholarships to poor students.

Tamano said of the all candidates, he could claim that he represents the youth.

The 39-year-old lawyer said he had been associated with young people since he taught economics in 1993.

A native of Lanao Del Norte, Tamano said “it’s been a long time since a Muslim became a senator.”

He added that the last Muslim senator was his father, the late Sen. Mamintal Tamano.

Tamano said he will work for the “genuine peace process” in Mindanao.
