ANGELES CITY – Mayor Francis Nepomuceno’s son Gerard on Monday said his options to run for congressman in 2010 remains “open” despite the recent declaration of their ally that he will seek the same post.

In an interview at the city hall, Gerard said that the decision of three-term Councilor Ares Yabut to run for solon in the province’s first district “is his personal decision.”

“The filing of candidacy is still in November. We are still meeting and has yet to come up with the decision if I will run again,” said Gerard who lost to Pampanga’s first district Rep. Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin.

Mayor Nepumuceno, for his part, said he had sent a text message to Yabut after hearing news that he will run for congressman next year.

“But he didn’t respond. Will he really run?” added the mayor who spoke to Punto during the launching of twin fiesta celebration at the city hall.

Yabut stressed yesterday that he will not back out and will pursue his congressional bid “no matter what.”

“I would not take my family and parents in the press conference announcing my candidacy if I am not serious. They will be the last I will fool,” said Yabut.

If the younger Nepomuceno will decide to join the congressional race, it will be a three-cornered fight. His opponents will be Yabut, a long-time ally of his father, and Lazatin, who never lost in an election since 1987.
