CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Officials of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Pampanga led a forum at the Heroes Hall here on Wednesday to ensure the quality of products sold in the market.

Entitled “Forum on Products Standards,” the activity focused on the standards and specifications of construction and building materials.

“We invited mostly hardware owners to remind them of their obligation to sell products with the proper size, specifications and quality,” said DTI OIC provincial director Leonila Baluyut.

She also noted that steel products sold in the market should have “manufacturer’s logo, size, grade and color codes.”

“We want to help ensure the protection of the public, especially now that the construction business goes full blast as December nears,” said Baluyut.

The DTI officials, in the same event, also urged the audience to be “self-employed and start their own businesses.”

Mario Gaudiancio of the Bureau of Products Standards (BPS) also graced the forum and spoke about the BPS’s role in ensuring the safety and quality of steel, cement, ceramics and electric materials. BPS is under the DTI.

He noted that some of the disasters such as fire were caused by “faulty and sub-standard products.”

The DTI and BPS formed a team that inspects the products sold in hardware stores and construction firms.

Some erring firms, they said, were slapped with the necessary penalties and sanctions.

“They may be closed permanently if they continue to sell poor-quality and sub-standard products,” said Baluyut.
