MABALACAT, Pampanga  – The return of two former councilors in the elections next year has made the race “a tight one,” Senior Board Member Cris Garbo of this town said yesterday.

Garbo disclosed that former Councilors Liza Pineda and Cherry Manalo would join the town councilors’ election in 2010, describing them “as forces to reckon with.”

“The record speaks for itself. The two women have been undefeated in several councilors’ contests,” said Garbo. He added Manalo became a top councilor and Pineda got the second highest number of votes in the 2004 elections.

“Even the incumbents should not be complacent as many aspirants are strong and ripe,” said Garbo, who entered the political arena as a councilor here in 1992.

At least six councilors – Froy Galang, Oscar Aurelio, Jerry Basilio, Benny Jocson, Christian Halili and Eddie Soto – are expected to seek re-election.

Top Councilor Noel Castro is in his second term but expressed his intention to run for vice mayor next year.

Garbo said other councilor wannabes are “winnable.” They are former Dau barangay captain candidate Marcos “Jun” Castro, environmentalist Rox Pena and former Association of Barangay Councilos (ABC) President Amauri “Bok” Tiglao.

Garbo said Castro “has a political machinery.”

He added that Pena “almost won in the last elections and looked ripe this time.”

“You can’t discount the winnability of Tiglao as a former ABC chief,” said Garbo.
