CLARK FREEPORT – “Political unity is needed to start healing in the country.”

Thus said Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro in his speech during a meeting with the Pampanga Mayor’s League (PML) here on Saturday.

“We must learn to forgive and not dwell on the past. We must think of what we could do now in order to ensure a bright future for the people,” said Teodoro, the youngest-ever defense secretary of the country.

A bar top notcher in 1989, Teodoro expressed his intention to run for president to the PML members led by Lubao Mayor Dennis Pineda.

All but two mayors – Jay Sagum of San Luis and Yolly Pineda of Sta. Rita – attended the meeting organized by Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo.

Teodoro disclosed that his “only choice” as his running-mate is Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, who wants to run for vice president.

Teodoro said the ruling party has yet to make a choice as who will be the standard-bearer of the Lakas-NUCD.

He added that at least six persons are being considered by the party.

Pelayo said the “wise people of Candaba” will back Teodoro. He added that the cabinet official “had the direction, competence and doesn’t plan to have vengeance against his political foes.”

“We feel that you will be the next president,” said Mabalacat Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales.

He lauded Teodoro for stating earlier that the support of President Arroyo “was not a kiss of death.”

“You need the blessing of GMA in order to become president. Hope you get it,” said Morales earning applause from the mayors.

Teodoro said he will continue the projects of Arroyo once elected as president.

The 43-year-old former Tarlac congressman said the next President should ensure the continuous growth of Central Luzon.

Teodoro said he will focus on education,  peace and order and sound fiscal management if given a chance to lead the country as president.

Teodoro also vowed to provide “study-now-pay-later” college program.
