ANGELES CITY – “It’s a campaign material meant to dilute the real issue that Porac piggeries continue to emit foul smell.”
Thus said Ruperto “Perto” Cruz, chairman of the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM), as he expressed dissatisfaction over the findings that six out of 12 piggeries reportedly emitting foul smell failed to meet the standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Cruz said that the report from the DENR-Environment and Management Bureau (EMB) had not been “feasible and believable because it lacks substance and relevant information.”
“The next elections is just around the corner and they are acting now to help them get votes,” said Cruz, who urged Porac residents not to support the re-election bid of Mayor Roger Santos and the other officials who failed to help get rid of the piggeries in Barangays Sta. Cruz and Paralaya.
Cruz said that the EMB report had failed to mention which among the six piggeries passed the standards set by Pollution Adjudication Board (PAB) of the DENR. He added that the report should have mentioned the facilities of the six piggeries which passed the standards.
“Is it because the six are not helping them with campaign funds? And the six others have been helping them?,” asked Cruz.
“The report is a pure deception,” he added.
Cruz also lamented that the same report had not tackled the issue of poultry farms in Porac. He added that not only piggeries but poultry farms as well emit foul smell.
“The only way to convince us that they are gone is that there no more foul smell and insects,” said Cruz.
Cruz, who owns a golf course at the boundaries of this city and Porac, assailed the EMB report because it failed to specify what penalties had been meted on the six who failed the standards.
“The report is a pure hogwash. We don’t believe the mayor and other officials as well,” he added.
Earlier, Task Force Chairman Rogie Pangilinan said his group is supporting the proposal of Porac Councilor Ludi Muli to reclassify Sta. Cruz and Paralaya from being agro-industrial to a “Class I residential area that would be based on a new comprehensive plan.” He added that the task force has endorsed Muli’s move to have Barangay Mitla, which is the proposed relocation site for the piggeries, to be declared as “livestock zone” where a central bio-digester” will be constructed for all the pig farms.
“Again, they are merely proposing disguised with campaigning. Where are the documents such as council resolution or ordinance to back-up their claim?” said Cruz.
The PGKM Chairman also asked Santos and Muli to conduct a public hearing in Mitla and nearby areas before deciding to relocate the piggeries in the village.
“They keep on mentioning Mitla when they had not even discussed the issue with its residents,’ said Cruz.
