SM City Tarlac partners with schools, institutions for Trash to Cash

Every first Friday and Saturday of the month from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, “Trash-to-Cash Recycling Market” will be held at SM City Tarlac and all other SM malls in the country. The program encourages the schools, private institutions and households to collect and sort out their household recyclable throwaways – paper, plastic, metal, and glass waste – to exchange these to cash.

Acceptable wastes are PET bottles, plastic scraps, plastic cups, hard plastic such as feeding bottles and monoblocs, tin and aluminum cans, books, newspapers, bond paper, cartons, magazines, scratch papers, cardboard, metal cookware, glass bottles, glassware such as plates and glasses, glass cookware, tin cans, aluminum cans, metal cookware, scrap metal, scrap aluminum, can oil, stainless and kitchen utensils. Batteries, car batteries, ink cartridge, computer, television and other electronic waste are not accepted due to its hazardous content.

Below is the schedule for the whole year 2019: March 1-2, April 5-6, May 3-4, June 7-8, July 5-6, August 2-4, September 6-7, October 4-5, November 1-2 and December 6-7. For SM City Tarlac, location is at Open Parking Area in front of Alfresco.

In cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Trash to Cash Recycling Market is one of SM Supermalls’ institutional environmental programs that aims to raise awareness on environmental issues as well as provide a public incentive program for proper disposal and management of waste materials.

Launched since 2007, it has now enabled SM Supermalls to save 29,000 seven-year-old trees, recycled almost 700 tons of waste, saved as much as 4,311 cubic meters in landfill space and generated P19 million for those who have traded in their recyclables.

This project is a support to Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. The act calls for “practical applications of environmentally sound techniques of waste minimization such as segregation, recycling, resource recovery, re-use and composting.”
