We will never have enough of her. The details of her current marital woes are like a new telenovela, complete with the necessary context and obligatory cast of characters. As any telenovela, the juiciest parts of the story are expected to be squeezed out in dozes, some big, some small, but on a daily basis, enough to make the viewing public attentive.
From the latest press release I picked up, she’s not calling this marriage quits. She says this is only temporary separation. To make sure that the message has the semblance of truth, she had brought her two kids out of her house and took shelter at her elder sister’s abode.
She belied earlier reports that she stormed the house of a third party (the tag for the mistress/querida/kontrabida), a certain Mayen who happens to live in a nearby area where Kris the wife and James the husband live. Kris the wife went to the house of Mayen the kontrabida to remind her that she is— Kris Aquino, the wife.
Kris the wife further belied earlier news that she threw her tops while trying to confront Mayen the kontrabida. There was no commotion, Kris the wife claims. With the camera on her, Kris the wife took the defense, claiming among other things that in her long stay in show business, she has never been known to be the bungangera.
She made sure that the public is clear on her role and on her side of the fence. Just to make certain that the public will not be mislead, she has no qualms calling herself the victim.
To put the larger context, brother presidential-candidate, momentarily stopping his campaign sorties, was on a quick draw for his aggrieved youngest sister’s defense.
As explained by James the husband, Mayen the kontrabida, is a mere basketball fan who happens to have a problem with a current boyfriend.
Kris the victim-wife, of course, offered a compelling counter argument.
If Mayen the kontrabida is a mere fan who happens to be problematic, then James the husband acting as a crying shoulder is most foul.
Kris the victim-wife suggests that Mayen the kontrabida should be seeing a psychiatrist and not a married man.
This whole brouhaha, of course, has nothing to do with the newest telenovela that the television host and actress Kris Aquino is launching.
From what I gathered, the real-telenovela is given a crispy title: Kung tayo’y magkakalayo.
Now Michelle, that is what I call a perfect pitch. Moreover, you hit two birds with one shot.
You have a brother presidential-candidate who needs all the media mileage he can get, and a new for real telenovela which will be subjected in the cut-throat competition of two giant television networks vying for that precious number one rank.
Number one means cash—lots and lots of cash. You ask: who are laughing in the bank? Your guess is as good and probably as right as mine.
However, let us not be too quick to point fingers. Kris Aquino— the aggrieved victim-wife, the television host and actress, the sister to a presidential candidate—is our creation.
That she was able to build a whole industry on her private pains for public consumption is attributed not only to her skills of knowing what the public wants, but because we also take the bait.
This is showbiz culture at its predatory best. Today, the reality shows and the telenovelas are the very fabric that defines our lives. We can pass attending the holy mass, even forget to pray before we retire. Or, read a decent book, but not our favorite evening treat.
The sumptuous treat resembles between and among a reality show, a game show, or a telenovela or all of the above.
Further, the showbiz culture is a life dictated by the cameras. You hardly notice the real and the inauthentic. The private joys and pains are reduced to a commodity. The more dramatic, the better the public attention and reception.
Even the most personal anguished truth, if there is any, is for sale.
And the public, in the end, is all too-willing to pay a price for its insatiable voyeuristic inclinations.
Sustained by a company of collaborators (Boy Abunda et. al) whose pay check, incidentally dwarfs those of public school teachers et. al, Kris Aquino and the likes, act out life, frame by frame, to imitate reality shows and telenovelas, or the other way around.
Of course, with a camera on tow.
