SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — More than 10,000 runners from Manila, Bulacan, Olongapo City, and Pampanga joined the Trilogy Run for the West Philippine Sea on Oct. 11, highlighting the importance of protecting the country’s maritime territory, marine resources, and coastal communities.

Cabinet Secretary Benhur Abalos and San Antonio Mayor Doc Arvin Antipolo also participated in the event, which formed part of the “West Philippine Sea, Atin Ito” campaign to strengthen public support for marine conservation and uphold the rights of Filipino fishermen.

He also emphasized the importance of coordinating with local government units and listening to the concerns of coastal communities directly affected by challenges in the maritime area.

“Mas lalong pinaiigting ng ating mahal na Pangulo ang kampanya sa West Philippine Sea. Kagaya ngayon, may isinasagawang malawakang kampanya ng ‘West Philippine Sea, Atin Ito,’ isa na rito sa bayan ng San Antonio. Inatasan tayo na makilahok at magbigay-suporta,” Abalos said.

Antipolo, meanwhile, said the event also highlighted San Antonio’s potential as a tourism destination in Zambales, with visitors and participants contributing to economic activity in the municipality.

He cited Pundaquit, one of the town’s barangays known for its coastal attractions, where hotels were reportedly fully booked during the event. The influx of visitors provided local businesses and residents with opportunities to benefit from increased tourism-related spending.

The mayor said events of this scale not only raise awareness about the West Philippine Sea but also help generate economic opportunities for his constituents through increased demand for accommodation and other tourism services.

The participation of runners from different parts of Central Luzon and Metro Manila underscored the event’s reach beyond San Antonio, bringing together participants in support of marine conservation while showcasing the municipality’s tourism offerings.
