MALOLOS CITY—Cases of leptospirosis in Bulacan continue to rise with 22 confirmed cases and three casualties.

Dr. Joycelyn Gomez, head of the public health division of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) said that all confirmed cases in the province were reported by public hospitals.

“Hindi pa kasama sa report yung mga ipinasok sa mga private hospitals if there’s any,” Gomez said.

Last week, cases rose from 15 to 19 with one casualty.

But latest report from the public health office showed that cases climbed to 22 with three casualties.

Records showed that leptospirosis cases has been reported in the towns of Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas, San Rafael, Baliuag, Bustos, Sta. Maria, and Plaridel; and the cities of Malolos and Meycauayan.

Two of the casualties were identified as Mark Anthony Jutara, 21, of Marilao, and Michael Rafael, 30, of Baliuag town.

Gomez said the number of cases may continue to rise due to continued flooding in some areas in the province brought by typhoons.

She said there might be other cases in the private hospitals in the province but have not been reported to them.

She added that they also intensified information campaign against leptospirosis in the province.

“People need to be reminded of the dangers of leptospirosis, on where and how they can be infected with it,” Gomez said.

She explained that leptospirosis can be contacted through water contaminated by the urine of rats and other animals.

“Let’s be wary if we have open wound on our foot, it can be the entry point of leptospirosis virus,’ Gomez said.
