MALOLOS CITY—The Tollways Management Corp. (TMC) reminded motorists to drive safely, obey traffic rules, and observe basic road courtesy along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX), and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) this Holy Week.

As the operator of the NLEX, SFEX and SCTEX, the TMC issued the reminder on Friday as thousands prepare for the Lenten season.

Betty Jose, TMC’s corporate communications official, said “driving comes with responsibilities so that travel within the expressways is on-time, safe, secure and comfortable.”

She said that the TMC’s advice is just a reminder to motorists to particularly observe the speed limit while traveling at NLEX, SFEX and SCTEX.

“Over-speeding is a common traffic violation in the expressways, as the maximum speed allowed in the expressway is 100 kph and any speed higher than 100kph will be apprehended,” she said.

Jose also noted that disregarding traffic signs (DTS) is another common traffic violation, especially when motorists overstay on the leftmost lane or innermost lane of the expressway despite the big signage, which reads “Keep Right Except to Overtake.”

In a three or four-lane expressway, the innermost lane must always be left open and must be used only for overtaking and after doing so, the motorist must shift back to the right lane.

Aside from that, the innermost lane is also used by ambulances in responding to emergencies.

This Holy Week, TMC is expecting a holiday peak of 10 to 15 percent normal traffic volume in NLEX.

Fully operational SCTEX also expects an increase in vehicle volume, particularly in going to Subic.

Jose said TMC is taking additional measures to ensure safe and convenient travel for thousands of vacationers heading to the North.

On April 8, traffic build-up is expected in Balintawak Toll Plaza in NLEX, Tipo Toll Plaza in SFEX, and the NLEX/Mabalacat Interchange (formerly Clark Logistics) Toll Plaza, Tipo Toll Plaza and Tarlac Toll Plaza in SCTEX.

To ease up traffic congestion in the Edsa Balintawak cloverleaf northbound during the Holy Week, the Quirino Highway service road will be open to all vehicles that pass through NLEX starting February 2009.

Traffic management teams will also be deployed within the Balintawak Cloverleaf area and from time to time at the Quirino Highway Service Road entry to NLEX, at interchanges such as Valenzuela, Meycauyan, Sta. Rita, Bocaue, and San Fernando for NLEX; and Tipo, Tarlac and NLEX/Mabalacat (Formerly Clark Logistics) Toll Plazas for SCTEX.

Likewise, Traffic Management and Roadway Security Patrol Teams are patrolling the carriageway to ensure the safety of motorists.

Composite security team will also be deployed along the SCTEX coming from the BCDA, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and the Clark Development Corporation.

Strategic relay stations for the security patrol teams are set up throughout the carriageway to do their rounds and respond to any emergencies within 20 minutes.
