MARIVELES, Bataan -Good news for residents of this town and workers at the Freeport Area of Bataan! At long last, the town will have a hospital of its own, outgoing Mayor Jesse Concepcion announced Tuesday.

Expected to operate on February 2016 is the Mariveles District Hospital with initial 50-bed capacity.

To benefit from the new government hospital are residents in 18 barangays with estimated population of 120,000 and 25,000 workers from multinational companies at the Freeport Area of Bataan, former Bataan Export Processing Zone turned-Bataan Economic Zone.

Concepcion said Mariveles has the biggest population in Bataan but has no district hospital and only relied on the small Maheseco Hospital that can only treat minor cases.

“Malaking kahalagahan ang bagong ospital sa Mariveles sapagka’t hindi na kailangang itakbo pa ang mga pasyenteng malala ang kalagayan sa mga ospital sa Balanga City na mahigit 48 kilometro ang layo,” he said.

“Dahil sa layo, may pagkakataong hindi na umaabot ang grabeng pasyente sa Balanga,” said the mayor who is no longer seeking re-election being on his last term.

Concepcion said they renovated the old building of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines that transferred to a new site in Mariveles. The municipal government shared P10 million while the provincial government chipped in about P30 million for the renovation.

He said that he was hoping that the Department of Health will help them with additional funds.

The mayor was thankful to GN Power Plant, a coal-fired power plant in Alas-Asin, seaside village in Mariveles, that pledged to donate to the new hospital all medical equipment from the United States that it will bring in its outreach program sometime February 2016.
