Bataan folk ‘set aside’ red tide, cheered for Manny

    BALANGA CITY, Bataan – Glued on television watching the Pacquiao- Margarito fight, Bataan folk seemed to have temporarily forgotten the red tide that has affected thousands of fishermen and vendors. 

    Residents here watched and cheered for Manny Pacquiao on Sunday not only in free viewing at the giant Bataan People’s Center but in various centers in almost 11 towns and one city and some restaurants.

    Gov. Enrique Garcia and sons Balanga City Mayor Joet Garcia and Rep. Albert Garcia sponsored the free viewing at the Bataan People’s Center with free snacks for the viewers.

    At the Giants and Dayrit Restaurants in Balanga City, hundreds watched in small television monitors in every nooks and corners of the establishments. Viewers at the Giants paid P200 with a free beer. At Dayrit, customers watched for free but paying their orders in full.

    Some tricycle drivers were seen watching outside the screened fence of Dayrit.

    In Samal town, Mayor Gene dela Fuente installed two big television monitors at the municipality’s covered court.

    In Pilar, Bataan, Mayor Carlos Pizarro, Jr. and daughter Kate, provincial board member, sponsored the free viewing at the air-conditioned Pilar Convention Center at the Bataan Government Center.

    “Magaling talaga, super, maipagmamalaki si Pacquiao,” said Mayor dela Fuente who stood up and bit her lips when Pacquiao was hit by Margarito.

    “Maawain si Pacquiao kaya umabot ng 12 rounds.” “Pilipino talaga magaling.” “Pwede pa lumaban uli si Pacquiao. Hirap na hirap si Margarito,” were the common remarks among the viewers.
