BALER, Aurora (PIA) — A total of 24 fisherfolk in Dinalungan, Aurora completed a two-day fish processing training conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to strengthen their skills and expand livelihood opportunities through science, technology, and innovation.

The agency provided ₱373,000 worth of fish processing equipment for the DICADI Fishery and Fish Processing Support project under the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) program to produce value-added products such as Smoked Burao and Salmon, Tulingan and Yellowfin Gourmet, and Dried Burao.

DOST Aurora Science Research Specialist Regine Maines-Agumboy said the training activity aims to enhance the productivity and income of local fisherfolk while contributing to the province’s long-term economic growth.

Equipment provided include a smokehouse, multi-purpose solar drying trays, stainless steel tables, pressure cooker, heavy-duty burner, impulse sealer, and digital weighing scale.

“These are all designed to boost productivity and ensure product safety and quality through science and technology interventions,” Agumboy furthered.

Aurora State College of Technology Assistant Professor Mark Lester Cunanan guided the participants in mastering proper fish handling and preparation techniques to ensure food safety, preserve freshness, and improve product quality.

Relative to this, DOST will conduct a capacity building activity on packaging and labeling to help sustain and enhance the skills of the attendees, and improve product presentation and market readiness of locally processed fish products.

Agumboy emphasized that the GIA program demonstrates how science and technology can uplift coastal communities by providing sustainable and inclusive livelihood opportunities.

As part of its continuing efforts, DOST strengthens its programs in livelihood, education, environment, and disaster resilience, ensuring that science-based innovations continue to benefit communities and promote inclusive growth in the province. (CLJD/MJRD, PIA Region 3-Aurora)
