CITY OF SAN FERNANDO— Kapampangan brilliance is making waves on the global stage as KJHP Design Group secures a finalist spot in the prestigious Architizer Vision Awards 2025 in New York with its standout project, the Bangkung Malapad Ecotourism Park.
Representing the Architectural Concept: Vision for Localism category, the project reimagines the Sasmuan Bangkung Malapad Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (SBMCHEA), a 13-hectare mangrove wetland formed from volcanic sediments following the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo.
“Our vision for the project focuses on creating harmony between nature and community,” explained Ar. Kym Jaffna Henson Pineda, lead architect of the project.
“The priority is to protect and rehabilitate the mangrove ecosystem while integrating local craftsmanship, culture, and sustainable design,” added Pineda.
The concept pays homage to Sasmuan’s colorful fluvial parade and its rich aquaculture traditions. By weaving patterns of traditional net-making into the structures and utilizing local materials, the design embraces Kapampangan artistry while promoting ecological preservation. More than an ecotourism attraction, it is envisioned as a living model of sustainable, community-centered architecture.
The Architizer Vision Awards is a globally recognized program that celebrates bold architectural ideas shaping the future of public spaces, housing, and urban design. By honoring projects that challenge norms and spark innovation, the awards empower architects and designers to rethink the built environment as a force for progress and sustainability.
The Bangkung Malapad Ecotourism Park was brought to life by a passionate Kapampangan team composed of Ar. Pineda, Bryan T. Carlos, and Erl John Q. Villapana under KJHP Design Group. Their collaborative effort reflects not just technical expertise but also a deep commitment to preserving heritage and protecting the environment.
With its recognition in New York, the project puts Pampanga and the Philippines firmly on the global design map. It is a milestone that highlights Kapampangan creativity, resilience, and vision, proving that local traditions and natural heritage can inspire world-class design.
As the world turns its attention to sustainable and community-driven solutions, the Bangkung Malapad Ecotourism Park shines as a beacon of hope, where nature, culture, and innovation come together in harmony.
