BALANGA CITY – President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Friday urged entrepreneurs to engage into businesses that will help save the environment and put a stop to climate change.

“Dahil tuwing Biyernes ay Climate Change Day, I can’t help but ask na sana magkaroon tayo ng mga negosyo o entrepreneur na maliliit na pwedeng lumaki na susubaybayan ng Go Negosyo na sasagip sa ating kalikasan at kontra  climate change,” Mrs. Arroyo said in a short speech.

“At sana sa susunod na tatanggap ng entrepreneurship awards ay kabilang na ang may ganitong negosyo na iwas sa climate change,” Arroyo added.

Mrs. Arroyo was in Balanga City and led the awarding of “Go Negosyo Most Inspiring Bataeno Microentrepreneurs” and “Go Negosyo Most Inspiring Bataeno Entrepreneurs” to 15 successful businessmen in Bataan.

She also handed two wheelchairs, 25 nebulizer kits and other benefits coming from the “Common Tao Day” program of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes. At least 1,200 people were also given free medical, dental and optical services.

Arroyo said that she came to know that some people engages in small-scale or even medium scale logging to make charcoal. She said that instead of logs, a new business can be established making use of garbage in the production of charcoal.

The President said that the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources have available technology that needs capitalization ranging from P200,000 to P500,000 to produce charcoal from wastes.

Other examples she cited were the use of plastics in the production of construction materials and turning waterlilies into handicrafts.

“Mababawasan ang ating mga basura, lilinis ang ating mga ilog at matitigil  ang mga pagbaha,” Mrs. Arroyo said.

She estimated that an investment of about P500,000 is needed to turn plastics into construction materials.

She lauded Go Negosyo advocates headed by Joey Concepcion and Bataan officials led by Gov. Enrique Garcia and sons Rep. Albert Garcia and Balanga City Mayor Joet Garcia for the success of the launching of the Go Negosyo caravan in the province.

The Garcias were so thankful to the President for always helping Bataan. Mrs. Arroyo recalled that she was with the Department of Trade and Industry under then Sec. Jose Concepcion when she helped formed the Bataan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “Natutuwa ako na malaki na ang BACCI,” she said.

Oscar Banzon, one of the awardees for Most Inspiring Bataeno Entrepreneurs, said Go Negosyo was a good project that would help inspire more people to go into business.

Before the President arrived, a big march attended by about 4,000 people was held in the morning from the Balanga City Hall to the Bataan People’s Center.

Paulo Tibig, BACCI president, said this was the start of more activities for them to help their provincemates into going into business while still young.
