ABUCAY, Bataan- “I shall return,” was the famous statement of the late Gen. Douglas MacArthur when he left Bataan during World War II but the migratory birds do not have to fulfill a promise for they keep on returning to the historic province come  late September and stay until March every year.

Local children seem to be unmindful of the white egrets flying Friday over a dry fishpond in Mabatang, Abucay, Bataan and diving to catch small fish for food.

The birds flew away upon hearing the sounds of horns of passing vehicles along the MacArthur Highway but returned to dive again.

The migratory birds are in Bataan in time for the Philippine Bird Festival to be held October 9 – 10 in the City of Balanga, some five kilometers away from Abucay. The festival has for the theme “Ibong Dayo, Kaibigan Tayo.”

The seaside villages of Puerto Rivas, Tortugas and Sibacan in Balanga have been recorded as the most popular stop-overs and feeding grounds for thousands of migratory birds that include egrets, gulls, terns and herons.

The Department of Tourism has included Balanga as one of the more than a dozen bird-watching sites in the Philippines.
