BALANGA CITY- The city government has preserved and displayed a baby melon-headed whale born after operation from its dead mother which was part of more than 200 whales that got beached last February 11 in Pilar, Bataan but shoved towards the deep sea.

Billy Santos, a fisherman leader and consultant to the Office of Balanga City Mayor Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia III,  said on Wednesday that the city government decided to preserve and put on display the baby dolphin at the city hall lobby  to create awareness and as an educational tool for students.

“Nais ni Mayor Joet na ipakita sa mga paaralan at sa ibang mga mamamayan man na ang mga isda lalo na ang ganitong lahi na unti-unti nang nauubos ay dapat pangalagaan,” the fisherman said.

He said the baby dolphin will later be placed at a museum at the bird-watching site in Tortugas, a fishing village in Balanga.

He explained that veterinarians from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Ocean Adventure at the Subic Bay Freeport operated by caesarian section on the dead dolphin which was found by fishermen along with a dead  male dolphin  in Tortugas.

“Iluluwal na ang batang dolphin ngunit namatay ang ina matapos masaktan marahil sa mga lambat at nasadsad sa mababaw na bahagi ng dagat,” Santos said.

Visitors to the city hall could not help but notice the umbilical cord hanging from the preserved baby dolphin. “Para palang tao na may pusod,” they said

More than 200 melon-headed whales of the dolphin species were discovered beached in sitio Maasim, Wakas in Pilar town at 2:30 in the morning of February 11, 2009. Bantay Dagat, police, fishermen and residents of Pilar headed by Gov. Enrique Garcia and Mayor Carlos Pizarro, Jr. shoved the reluctant sea mammals towards the deep sea near Corregidor Island.
