CABANATUAN CITY – The fight against the opening of a casino in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija got a new face – it’s now on Facebook, a popular social networking site.
Created by an unidentified “crusader”, the account can be reached by searching “STOP CASINO IN NUEVA ECIJA” has so far been liked by 250 site users based on its sidebar information.
“We have to stop casino. It will destroy families and more lives,” commented account user Hermie Cabalang. Another account by a certain Elmer Abalos readily agreed for the need to stop the new gambling establishment which is nearing completion in Barangay Diversion, San Leonardo.
The campaign account has link the accounts of Rev. Fr. Sedfrey Calderon of the Diocese of Cabanatuan which carries the Pastoral Letter earlier issued by seven bishops of the Ecclesiastical province of Lingayen-Dagupan and another webpage, Zenit The World Seen from Rome.
Both materials deal on the ills of casinos.
On the other hand, some local officials believe that the establishment of the casino in the town will pave the way for the long over due development of the municipality, a basically agricultural territory some 100 kilometers north of Metro Manila.
The P60-million casino building is nearing completion at a five-hectare area in Barangay Diversion along the Maharlika Highway here. The project, covering a floor area of 2,300 square meters is reportedly owned by a certain Jose Madrigal. It is expected to start operations either next month or in September.
The town is expected to gain some P500,000 to P1-million in taxes from the casino.
