ANGELES CITY – The city’s intensified waste segregation at source campaign met its initial success in Barangays Mining and Tabun, reported the city environment and natural resources office on Friday, Feb. 28.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. commended the Barangay Mining Council, led by punong barangay Lester Hernandez, and Barangay Tabun Council, headed by punong barangay Angel Cordero for taking an active role in ensuring the smooth implementation of the program in their respective communities.
The mayor also commended CENRO, led by Jenifer Castro, for ensuring that the waste segregation campaign is effectively carried out at the barangay level, particularly in educating residents and monitoring compliance.
Field teams from CENRO carried out house-to-house distributions of segregation guidelines and collection schedules in the said barangays.
Barangay Mining received its materials on January 30, while compliance monitoring of waste collection trucks began on February 13.
The CENRO reported a marked improvement in adherence to the waste segregation policy, with barangay collection teams demonstrating proper separation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
CENRO head Castro emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in the success of the program. “By involving residents, businesses, and schools, we are building a culture of responsibility. This initiative is not just about compliance but fostering long-term environmental stewardship in Angeles City.”
The campaign is part of the city’s broader solid waste management plan, mandated under RA 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000) and guided by Chapter 3 of City Ordinance No. 431 (the Amended Angeles City Environmental Code).
With Barangays Mining and Tabun setting the pace, the city remains committed to rolling out the program across all 33 barangays, ensuring that Angeles City continues to lead in environmental responsibility and waste management best practices.
To recall, the city government launched its waste segregation program in Barangay Capaya and recently opened its transfer station, marking a major milestone in strengthening waste management infrastructure and promoting cleaner, more efficient waste disposal practices in the city. Angeles CIO
