SAN RAFAEL, Bulacan (PIA) — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has produced about 273 metric tons of Bagong Bayaning Magsasaka (BBM) rice through its contract farming program in Central Luzon.
This production contributes to the program’s nationwide target of cultivating rice across 40,000 hectares, with the region accounting for 1,700 hectares.
During the 22nd episode of the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas of the Philippine Information Agency, NIA Regional Manager Josephine Salazar reported that approximately 1,300 hectares have already been harvested.
“The remaining area for harvest is around 400 hectares. So, for those 400 hectares, we plan to harvest this week. We will likely conduct an early harvest to avoid any disruption from [Tropical Storm] Kristine,” she stated.
The harvested 237 metric tons equate to around 23,000 bags of 10-kilo BBM rice, which is available exclusively through Kadiwa ng Pangulo caravans.
Salazar noted that over 10,000 bags have already been distributed to Kadiwa stores, with another 10,000 bags prepared for distribution.
NIA’s contract farming initiative provides participating farmers with P50,000 in initial assistance, which includes P30,000 for seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, along with P20,000 in cash to cover labor costs.
Salazar explained that after the harvest, NIA collects the rice and compensates farmers with an additional P50,000 for five metric tons delivered.
Meanwhile, any excess production remains with the farmers for personal use or sale.
Salazar emphasized that BBM rice is freshly harvested and immediately milled for distribution, ensuring prompt availability to consumers at Kadiwa stores.
At a price of P29 per kilo, the program not only supports farmers but also benefits vulnerable sectors by providing affordable rice.
BBM rice is sold to vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries.
Salazar noted that priority recipients of the BBM rice are identified through collaboration between local government units and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
