SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Expect another exciting sports season this summer in the Subic Bay Freeport, as organizers present event after event of races, physical competitions, and fun games designed to thrill both sports buffs and weekend tourists.

According to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) deputy administrator for business Raul Marcelo, a full season of sports festivals has been scheduled starting this month as part of the agency’s tourism program in cooperation with private organizers.

“Subic is known for its unique blend of business and leisure. But this summer, we’ll be outdoing ourselves,” Marcelo said. “Tourists can forego some of the usual activities at the beach and forest trails so they can enjoy the more exciting sports activities,” he added.

Marcelo also urged Subic visitors to join the events “so that they can truly enjoy the uniquely Subic experience.”

Opening the Subic sports season this month is the First Subic Experience Travel Card National Badminton Open, which is scheduled at the Subic Gym on February 19-21.

This will be followed by the Subic segment of the country’s favorite endurance race, dubbed “Tour of Luzon Street 6: Subic Street Race” on March 4. The event will be a 90-kilometer street race in the Subic Bay Freeport, with participants going through a grueling route that starts at the Tarlac Highway and down through the FedEx-Camayan Beach- Subic Raceway loop before finishing at the Tarlac Highway’s 600-meter climb finish.

As the summer season gets hotter, expect the return of the Terry Larrazabal Bike Festival, which will again showcase foreign and local participants’ skills in off-road and on-road biking. Likewise, the 2010 edition of the true-blue Filipino bike “Padyak Pinoy” will hit the road on April 19-20 at Subic Bay’s Boardwalk Park.

Marcelo also said that Subic will be the venue of other exciting competitions like the Beach Football Tournament organized by the Beach Football Association of the Philippines (BFAP) on March 6-7 at the Boardwalk Park; a sport fishing tournament on March 14 at the access road of the Freeport’s New Container Terminal; and the 2010 SBMA Jet Ski Cup Series, where big wave-runners are expected to vie for the gold also at the at the Boardwalk area.

According to Marcelo, Subic is now among the favorite venues of sports organizers for local and international events like the Asian Duathlon Championships, Subic Adventure Race, Taekwondo Open Championships, Bike Festival Asia, and Smart Communications’ Subic International Marathon.

Likewise, he noted that the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) has been holding almost all of its events, including three Asian championships, at Subic Bay.

These have made Subic a one-of-a-kind destination, Marcelo said.

“If you want peace and quiet, you can find that in Subic still. But if you want action and adrenaline-pumping events, then Subic is also the place for you this summer season,” he added.
