ANGELES CITY – In less than a week, Remy Ponce was able to raise P3,000 for a small chess tournament in Barangay Virgen Delos Remedios where she lives.

She believes that one of the best ways to help a candidate is to become a volunteer and raise funds for his campaign.

“We raise funds to organize small tournaments like chess, then we invite Sec. Ed Pamintuan to speak and be with us for a few minutes,” says Remy who organized the first Volunteers of EdPam Inter-Street Chess Tournament on Feb. 6-7 along J.P. Laurel street.

Three participants coming from J.P. Laurel street won the major prizes. Fer Aquino bagged the 1st place, Del Palacio placed 2nd and Ambet Liwanag placed 3rd. Roden Pontawe of Sor Luisa St. placed 4th. Winners received cash prizes and trophies.

Remy says her group, the Remedian Chess and Darts Club, also helped in raising funds through solicitations from residents who are also sports enthusiasts.

Club members, who regularly meet in front of Aquino’s Sari-sari store, say that “playing almost every night keeps us and other youths away from various vices especially illegal drugs.”

They disclosed that Barangay VDR Chess Team even placed second in a recent inter-barangay chess tournament held in Balibago.

Asked why their group supports EdPam, they said the former mayor was very supportive of sports during his stint.

It was during Pamintuan’s administration that Angeles City bagged the overall championship for two consecutive years the prestigious Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) annual sports meet.

After the two-day chess tilt, Remy now starts raising funds for the “Volunteers of EdPam Inter-Street Darts Tournament”.

“P3,000 would be enough to cover the prizes and other expenses,” she says. “It’s not the prize but the opportunity to motivate the youth to be active in sports.”

“After every tournaments that we organize, we members cheap-in our share and buy pansit or pandesal and eat together.”

Pamintuan, who graced the activity on Feb. 6, has vowed to strengthen the city’s sports programs “if given the chance to serve my constituents again.”

He is running for mayor here this coming May elections and up against Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno and Balibago Barangay Captain Rodelio “Tony” Mamac.
