TARLAC CITY (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) urges women to have regular screening to prevent cervical cancer.

There are three ways of tests for cervical cancer namely Human Papillomavirus self-collection, visual inspection through acetic acid, and pap smear.

DOH Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) Non-communicable Diseases Cluster Senior Health Program Officer Agnes Alipio said screening can detect precancerous changes or early stage cancerous conditions before symptoms will develop.

“Early detection allows for timely intervention which can prevent the progression of cervical cancer,” she stressed.

Frequency of regular screening may vary depending on individual risk factors, but it is advisable for women in general to undergo screening at least every three to five years.

Some of the risk factors for acquiring cervical cancer are smoking, multiple sexual partners, sex at an early age, having sexually transmitted infections, and a weak immune system.

Women experiencing unusual bleeding after sexual activity, persistent unusual vaginal discharge, and extreme pain and discomfort during sexual activity should consult their healthcare provider for proper intervention.

Meanwhile, DOH CLCHD capacitates health workers on screening, vaccination, cervical cancer awareness campaigns at the local level, and other gynecological care.

Mobile health units also visit underserved or geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas to provide screening, vaccination, and other basic health care services. (CLJD/GLSB, PIA Region 3-Tarlac)
