STO. TOMAS, Pampanga – Despite having the lowest annual yearly budget, the municipal government’s scholarship program benefited some 700 poor but deserving students here.

Mayor Joselito “Jun” Naguit yesterday disclosed that their P54-million budget for this year had included giving scholarships to high school and elementary students in all seven barangays here. This municipality’s budget is the lowest in the province.

“I was the first Sto. Tomas mayor to give scholarships for many students because I believe that education is very important,” Naquit said.

The two-term mayor said he had worked for the construction of at least 30 additional classrooms in public elementary schools since his first term. He added that more new classrooms are needed in this town.

San Matias Barangay Captain Pong Lingat said Naguit “had hit the mark” in helping more people get back to school.

Lingat, president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) here, added that “many had enrolled this year due to the municipal government’s help.”
