SUBIC BAY FREEPORT –Around 40 delegates and affiliates of leading news organizations in the Asia Pacific Region converged here to attend the 6th AsiaNet Forum slated January 11-12 at the Lighthouse Marina, this Freeport.

The two-day conference is spearheaded by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), News and Information Bureau, Office of the Press Secretary in coordination with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

SBMA Chairman Feliciano G. Salonga welcomed the delegates attending this event and invited them to enjoy the most exciting places and tourism facilities Subic Bay offers.

AsiaNet has 14 members throughout the region and four affiliates in the United States, Europe, Canada and Germany.  Among their members are the Antara Newswire, Australian Associated Press, , BERNAMA/MREM, Hyasia, Godspeed, InfoQuest, NCN Asia Pacific, Kyodo News JBN, Pakistan Press International, Press Trust of India, United News of Bangladesh, Xinhua News and Information Centre, Yonhap International, and Philippine News Agency.

“AsiaNet indeed is a significant force not only for the dissemination of news and information, but also for the promotion of truth, enlightenment, education and empowerment,” Salonga said.

In his speech, Salonga said that Subic through one of its biggest investors South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp-Philippines recently delivered the first crude oil tanker it built in its Subic facility.

“The ship, which has been named ‘Leyla k’ by its Turkish owner, the Kaptanoglu Shipping Lines, is bigger than all the eight container vessels that Hanjin has previously built here.  It is 241.27 meters long, 44 meters wide, and 21.35 meters deep.  It tips the scales of 114,000 deadweight tons.  It is a big ship – and a big, big story for the Subic Bay Freeport” Salonga added.

“With this, I hope that the members of the AsiaNet could help us disseminate the information that, yes, we’re already making maritime history here in Subic – and making big strides as well in the electronics sector, as well as in tourist,” he concluded.

Keynote speaker is Edilberto de Jesus, President of the Asian Institute of Management.
