MALOLOS CITY— At least six persons, mostly minors, were injured when aerial fireworks loaded in a truck exploded during a campaign sortie of a candidate for barangay captain here on Sunday.

Police identified the victims as Rhia Rose Santiago, 15; Jesselyn Menesses, 15, both residents of Menzyland Subdivision in barangay Mojon here; Rafaela Garcia, 15 from barangay San Gabriel; Ellen Genioso,15, and Jonh Bollar, 26, both residents of barangay Capitolyo here.

The said victims were rushed to the Bulacan Medical Center here shortly after 8 a.m. on Sunday due to injuries suffered from the explosion.

The sixth victim who was rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital for further treatment remains unidentified.

Police said that all victims were members of the campaign team of Teody Apostol, a candidate for barangay captain in Mojon.

The team were conducting a house-to-house campaign sortie at Felicisima subdivision around 8 a.m. when aerial fireworks in an Elf truck exploded causing minor burns, lacerations, and bruises on the legs and faces of the victims.

Franscisco  Ogoy, a village councilman candidate under the ticket of Apostol, said the victims were members of the so called “campaign angels”.

He said that the motorcade of their team had just started and was already moving when a group of youths started lighting fireworks.

Ogoy said some candidates have already told the youths to cease from lighting the aerial fireworks because it was creating smokes on their convoy.

“Nadamay yung mga bigkis ng kwitis sa truck at sumabog,” Ogoy said.
