56 vintage bombs dug up in Bataan

BAGAC, Bataan — Police reported that 56 vintage bombs were accidentally discovered in a village farm here Monday afternoon.

Bagac police chief Capt. Michelle Agnetha Gaviola said farmers found the bombs while they were planting sweet potatoes in a land in Barangay Parang and reported the matter to the police.

She said a team from the Bagac municipal and the provincial police with the provincial explosive canine unit led by Executive Master Sgt. Jonathan Tuppal  under the supervision of Capt. Esteban Baylon III unearthed the bombs known as explosive remnants of war (ERW).

Also assisting in the digging of the bombs were members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines military intelligence bureau under Capt. Angel Herrera.

The bombs identified as 75 mm, HE, projectile are remnants of World War II.

She said that if mishandled, the bombs can still explode and cause damage to life and property so the team applied render safe procedure and entrusted the items to the provincial explosive ordnance division.

Heavy fighting took place in Bagac and other towns of Bataan during WWII before Bataan fell to the Japanese invaders on April 9, 1942.
