SCIENCE CITY OF MUNOZ – Five suspected car thieves were killed before dawn Monday when they tried to crash through a police checkpoint here.

Senior Supt. Manuel Cornel, Nueva Ecija police director, said that before the incident they were alerted about the theft of a tricycle in Talavera town.

At about 3 a.m., five men aboard a tricycle and a motorcycle tried to plow through a police checkpoint set up at the start of a Comelec gun ban in Barangay Sapang Cauayan this city.

It was followed, he said, by gunfire from the occupants of the tricycle which prompted lawmen to retaliate that resulted to the death of all five suspects.

Macario Cruz, a resident of nearby Talavera town, later identified the tricycle as his, snatched by the armed men.

Police recovered from the encounter five .38 revolvers, Cornel said.
