BALANGA CITY — Some 5,000 seedlings of narra trees were planted in a hilly portion of Barangay Mabayo in Morong, Bataan on June 23, the provincial government announced Monday.

Gov. Jose Enrique Garcia 3rd said the tree-planting activity was in observance of Arbor Day or Tree-planting Day that was institutionalized by government to be observed every June 25 as a way of protecting and rehabilitating the environment.

Arbor Day is under Presidential Proclamation 643 that was signed  in 2004 to encourage people to plant trees.

The environment and natural resources office of the provincial government led in the activity in Morong which is at the backdoor of the Subic Bay Freeport.

More than 250 volunteers attended the tree-planting.

One of the coal-fired power plants in Bataan, the GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd Co., sponsored the project in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the local government unit of Morong.

Also participating were the Philippine National Police, private companies, non-governmental organizations and employees of the Bataan provincial government, among some others.
