CABANATUAN CITY – The Nueva Ecija police is skeptic about an intelligence report saying that 40 there are about 40,000 loose firearms and 70 syndicates in the province.

Senior Supt. Roberto Aliggayu who assumed post as director of the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office in mid-August this year said the “report may not be a result of a scientific research.”

“The figure is too high and would be believable if it pertains to the entire country,” he said.

Aliggayu reacted to the report by the Philippine National Police (PNP)

Directorate for Intelligence showing that there are 40,000 unlicensed firearms in the hands of lawless elements, Communist Party of the Philippines (CCP) and unscrupulous private individuals in Nueva Ecija.

The province is again listed as among the election hot spots for the upcoming synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

The DI arrived at the figures based on the assumption that 10 percent of the male population aged 18 years and above have guns.

Supt. Edgar Allan Okubo, group director of the Provincial Public Safety

Management Company based in Guimba town, said the DI report also tagged over 70 crime syndicates in the province.

“If there are 14,000 loose firearms, I might believe the report. But then, it’s still too many,” he said during a command conference at the provincial headquarters here over the weekend.
