BACOLOR, Pamp. – At least four people, one of whom is the eldest son of three-term Mayor Romeo “Buddy” Dungca, will reportedly slug it out for the top executive post of this town.
Ron Dungca yesterday said he decided to run for mayor on his own to “continue the legacy of his father.” He will turn 21 years old before the elections set in May 2010.
Ron said “age is not a qualification for leadership.” He added that “growing up with my father as mayor was enough to give me enough experience.”
“So many men such as Ninoy Aquino joined politics early in their life. The sincerity and willingness to serve the people are far more important,” he said.
Among his likely opponents are Vice Mayor Diman Datu, Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) President Jomar Hizon and former Board Member Ferdinand Labung.
In a chance interview at the Clark Freeport last week, Datu said he was “definitely running for mayor” despite being a political ally of Mayor Dungca.
“Go na tayo talaga,” said Datu, who was attending the Luzon Congress of the Vice Mayor’s League of the Philippines (VMLP) when interviewed by Punto.
Datu said Labung would not run for mayor because “I am a good friend of his.”
“He won’t fight me,” said Datu.
In his recent birthday party at his residence in Barangay Calibutbut, Labung said he will seek a public office in 2010. He, however, said he will divulge his political plan “in the near future.”
But close allies of Labung said “he wants more to be a mayor.’ The contractor-politician is also considering making a comeback as board member of the 3rd district.
In 2007, Labung lost his congressional bid against Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales.
Hizon is the son of prominent food magnate Lolita Hizon of the Pampanga’s Best.
