CABANATUAN CITY – Four people were charged for allegedly yielding six improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other blasting materials in a mountainous village of Marikit, Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija on Sunday.
Prosecutor II Efren Clint Mallare Jr. recommended the filing of illegal possession of explosive devises and materials against Joel Anonuevo, a resident of Dianawan, Aurora; Pedro Diaz, 27; Antonio Rivera, 35; and Freddie Geronimo, 45; all of Barangay Marikit, Pantabangan.
The complaints were filed by 1Lt. Saturnino Enofre III and 2Lt. Neil Edward Camarillo of the Charlie Company of the Army’s 81st Infantry Battalion based in the area.
In their complaint, the soldiers said they were conducting a military operation at about 8:30 a.m. when they chanced upon Anonuevo and Geronimo with back packs containing an IED and 20 blasting caps.
“Walang maipakitang kaukulang permit sa pagdadala ng mga blasting cap at improvised explosive device sina Joel Anonuevo at Freddie Geronimo kaya hindi namin sila pinaalis pa,” the duo said. Instead, they confiscated what they described as illegal items.
After about 5 minutes, the soldiers alleged that Diaz and Rivera arrived with a laptop battery and several dried battery cells, container cords and gasoline on small plastic containers.
When on their way to their vehicles to bring the suspects down the mountain, the soldiers said they were fired upon by a large group of suspected New People’s Army (NPA) which resulted to a firefight.
However, it was not clear if the attack by suspected NPAs has any relation with the arrest of the suspect.
The suspects said that they visited the area to catch wild birds or labuyo. They were jailed pending the filing of appropriate charges in court.
