CITY OF MALOLOS – Some 3,000 pet dogs and cats underwent free spay and castration procedures at the veterinary offices of local governments in various parts of the country in collaboration with the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) on March 19.

PVMA president Dr. Lina Policarpio and vice president Bulacan provincial veterinarian Dr. Voltaire Basinang said the program was conducted in 17 provinces, 39 cities, and 17 municipalities in the country.

Apart from spay and castration, the program also includes anti-rabies vaccination.

Citing the data from the Bureau of Animal Industry, PVMA said there are 13-million stray animals in the country and this program advocates to combat the spread of rabies by controlling animal population.

The PVMA officers further explained that the program will continue for free all year at all veterinary offices of LGUs.

In Bulacan alone, Basinang said they targeted 1,500 dogs and cats for spay, castration and anti-rabies vaccination covering the cities of Meycauyan, San Jose del Monte, and Malolos and the towns of Pulilan, Sta. Maria, and Marilao.

He said most of the participants were animal lovers who just adopted stray dogs and cats.
