CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga- Last Monday’s polls in Central Luzon was historic in the sense that as of yesterday, not a single election- related killing had been reported, Central Luzon police director Chief Supt. Rudy Lacadin said.

This, even as Lacadin cited reports that the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Zambales in his region have new governors. Cherry Umali of Nueva Ecija, Susan Yap of Tarlac and Amor Deloso of Zambales have already been proclaimed winners in their provinces.

Bataan’s Abet Garcia, Aurora’s Gerardo Noveras and Pampanga’s Lilia G. Pineda all won unopposed.

Incumbent Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino Alvarado was also re-elected, beating former Gov. Josie Dela Cruz.

In this province, eight towns will have new mayors, as indicated by final but unofficial figures from the Regional Election Monitoring and Assistance Center (REMAC) based here.

Pampanga will also have two new congressmen, after incumbents Joseller “Yeng” Guiao of the first district and Oscar Rodriguez of the third district lost to their rivals Jonjon Lazatin and Aurelio Gonzalez, respectively.

The newly-elected mayoral candidates in Pampanga included Dagi Salalila of Sta. Rita, Tek Concepcion of Sta. Ana, Teddy Tumang of Mexico, Malu Paras-Lacson of Magalang, Darwin Manalansan of Floridablanca, Daniel Baylon of Candaba, Peter Nucom of Apalit, and John Sambo of Sto. Tomas. Most of them had already been proclaimed as of yesterday.

In the cities of Angeles and Mabalacat, incumbents Edgardo Pamintuan and Marino Morales, respectively, were proclaimed winners.

In an interview, Lacadin noted that no election-related death has been reported throughout Central Luzon where past elections had been marred by killings.

“There are some reports of injuries, but no killings so far,” he said.

In a report, REMAC said that since the election period started in Central Luzon, some 540 prohibited firearms were confiscated. The arms included 636 guns, 167 bladed weapons, 56 gun replicas, 64 parts of guns, 29 grenades and three explosives.

Most of the arms were confiscated in Bulacan which yielded 152 pieces, and Nueva Ecija with 130 pieces, the report said.

The arrested persons included 614 civilians, three policemen, three government employees and 12 security guards.
