LIMAY, Bataan – Three died while two others were seriously injured when a passenger bus of the Bataan Transit Corp. smashed the tricycle the victims were riding on Saturday evening.
Attending physicians declared tricycle driver Leopoldo Tagasa, 24, and passenger Josephine Castilar dead on arrival at the Emergency Room of the Bataan General Hospital in Balanga City.
Minutes later, Tagasa’s wife Raquel died while being revived at the same government hospital. The woman was reportedly two months pregnant. Two other passengers of the tricycle, Joseph Castilar and Angelica Javier, 17, suffered severe injuries on their heads and other parts of their bodies.
Joseph recounted that they left Sitio Peas in barangay Duale to attend a wake. While going down, they were about to make a right turn when an incoming bus hit the tricycle they were riding. With the use of two hands, he demonstrated how the bus hit their vehicle.
He said he fell unconscious and only woke up at the hospital. His sister Josephine was one of the three fatalities.
Javier’s mother appealed that her daughter be operated on her sprained shoulder. The old woman and Joseph said they have not yet seen any official from the Bataan Transit at the hospital.
Bus driver Danilo Marcelo, 45, of Mariveles begged off to be interviewed allegedly upon the advice by his superiors. He was detained at the Limay police station. A dispatcher at the Bataan Transit terminal in Balanga said they have no radio contact with their main office in Quezon City and that the bus driven by Marcelo is under the Mariveles line.
PO2 Melchor Asebias, Limay police investigator, said the accident happened at about 10:00 p.m. The bus was bound for Mariveles from Metro Manila when it hit the tricycle along the Roman Superhighway in barangay Duale.
