CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some 2.5 million youths in Central Luzon started yesterday another school year.
The Department of Education (DepEd) said of the number, 1.9 million trooped to public schools and another 600,000 to in private schools.
“About 61,000 teachers are reporting to work again in the provinces of Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales for school year 2013-2014,” noted DepEd regional director Isabelita Borres.
Borres also said that about 13,000 classrooms have been rushed in the region to address classroom shortage.
She noted that this school year would be the start of the full implementation of the K-to-12 program following the passage and recent signing of President Aquino of its enabling law.
“The training for teachers in such curriculum is still ongoing. K-to-12 is very critical and will spell a lot of difference in learning and teaching,” Borres added.
The K-to-12 Program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education – six years of primary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school.
“It seeks to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship,” Borres also said.
