CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga- Independent Sen. Richard Gordon said here over the weekend that he remains open to being considered as presidential candidate by either the administration or the opposition.

“I have not really announced any plan to run for president despite the speculations,” said Gordon in an interview with local media during the conference-workshop on environmental security on tourism.

But Gordon said he is open to being considered presidential candidate of either the administration or the opposition.

“It all depends on which side will consider its candidate on the basis of track record and qualifications or on the basis of image and surveys,” he said.

Former Pres. Fidel Ramos earlier offered him to join the Lakas-Kampi CMD. Gordon has not made any commitment although Gordon said he would also want to bring  his group, the Bagumbayan – Volunteers for a New Philippines which is awaiting accreditation from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Citing his “track record” starting during his years as mayor of Olongapo City, Gordon lamented the propensity of political leaders to choose candidates on the basis of “image and surveys”.

“Lend me P100 million and just like (Sen. Manuel) Villar and (Sen. Mar) Roxas, I can advertise myself as pro-poor. I once worked as product manager of a marketing firm so I know how advertising can jack up one’s ratings in surveys,” he said.

Gordon batted for debates among presidential aspirants without promotional gimmicks. He suggested that such debates be aired by a government station.

“The problem is that some do not want to debate. They would rather just appear in television advertisements,” he said.

Gordon said that he will not announce his definite political plans in 2010 until 90 days before the elections.
