ANGELES CITY – Some 1,800 inmates detained at the Angeles City District Jail (ACDJ) now stand to benefit from the provisions of Republic Act (RA) 10592 which amended Articles 29, 94, 97, 98 and 99 of RA 3815 otherwise known as the Revised Penal Code.

Executive Judge Omar Viola of the Angeles City Regional Trial Court said the law stipulates that a convicted prisoner in any penal institution, rehabilitation, detention center or local jail is entitled to certain deductions from the period of his or her sentence for good conduct while in incarceration.

“A deduction of 20 days for each month of good behavior during the first two years of imprisonment; during the
third to the fifth year, a deduction of 23 days for each month is allowed; in the following years until the 10th year, a deduction of 25 days for each month is prescribed; and a deduction of 30 days for every month is allowed during the 11th and successive years of imprisonment,” Viola explained.

In addition, a prisoner is given a deduction of 15 days for each month of study, teaching or mentoring rendered
during his or her incarceration. “The director of the Bureau of Corrections, regional director of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology or wardens of provincial, district, city or municipal jils shall grant these good conduct allowances. Once granted, they shall not be revoked,” Viola said.
