Reports from the Subic police said the ill-fated bus was carrying about 50 workers who were picked up at Subic for work at the Korean shipyard.
One of the hospitalized victims, Michael Jasmin, 18, told police probers their bus had been in an apparent race with another bus along the zig-zag road towards Hanjin. When he overtook the other bus, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle which sped into a ravine about 10 meters deep.
Jasmin, who sustained a foot injury, said he was in the middle of the bus when it fell.
Initial police reports identified those who were heavily injured as Jo Ann Jade Guinto, Wilmer Fontillar, and Jaime Legaspina. While some of the workers later proceeded to work, at least two remained in hospitals for treatment of more serious injuries.
The reports said that the injured were brought to the San Marcelino district hospital in San Marcelino town, and Gordon and St. Jude hospitals in Olongapo City.
The police said that the bus, marked “Wisdom, Prosperity, Humanity” did not apparently belong to Hanjin. Its driver, identified as Jericho Llego, was reportedly not seriously injured and had allegedly fled the scene after the accident.
Levi Dalida of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) investigation office, said that the site of the accident is about two hours from Subic town proper and that its terrain is mountainous with zig-zagging roads.
