ORANI, Bataan – In a tear-jerking reunion, 130 prisoners from Bataan detained at the New Bilibid Penitentiary in Muntinglupa, Rizal recently finally met with their families, many of whom have not seen for almost 10 years.
Rep. Herminia Roman of Bataan’s First District made the reunion possible. She also handed the inmates with gifts while Kapuso star Teri Onor who is Abucay town Vice-Mayor Dexter Dominguez in real life provided entertainment numbers.
Prison acting director Ernesto Cabario said it was the first time a representative of a province showed concern to uplift the spirit of the inmates. He praised the efforts of the congresswoman and Teri for giving “simple but meaningful happiness to the prisoners who seemed to have been forgotten by their families for quite some time.”
Visiting members of families gave flowers to their detained love ones and hugged each other with tears flowing from their eyes.
Roman in her message said that her heart was broken and she too could not control her tears seeing the families in tight embrace for the first time after 10 years. She promised to do the activity every year even if she will no longer be an elective official of Bataan.
The lady solon and her husband, former Congressman Tony Roman, have been doing this activity to prisoners at the Bataan provincial jail in Balanga, patients in district hospitals, senior citizens and street children in the province during their birthdays.
This was the first time the couple extended the gift-giving to prisoners from the province inside the state penitentiary. Handed out were groceries, ham and some cash.
Darwin dela Cruz of Orani, Bataan, an inmate serving his sentence at the maximum security center, said that even if his family was not contacted still he was happy to know that there are still people who cared for them.
