SUBIC, Zambales – TEN fishermen were arrested by elements of the Zambales Criminal Investigation and Detection Team (ZCIDT) for “cyanide fishing” at the vicinity of Sitio Sampaloc, Barangay Cawag of this town, Tuesday afternoon.
In his report to Sr. Supt. Marvin Bolabola, regional chief, 3rd Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, Chief Inspector Rogelio Peñones, Jr., ZCIDT provincial chief, identified the suspects as Roberto Cruz, 51; Aries Flores, 19; Renato Undoc, 37; Darwin Dela Cruz, 22; Eddie Misa, 34; Leopoldo Fajardo, 37; Jose Avila, 54 and Rafael Gallardo, 32, all residents of Barangay Matain Subic, Zambales and Rolando Dizon, 40 and Ricky De Guzman, 34, all of Barangay Pundakit, San Antonio, Zambales.
Report said at about 4:30 p.m., suspects were arrested when the ZCIDT operatives were conducting seaborne patrol upon receiving report from a concern citizen that illegal fishing in the area ongoing.
Suspects were caught red handed on board two motorized fishing boats equipped with a compressor. They were brought to ZCIDT office for documentation while confiscated fishes of various kinds were brought to the PNP Crime Laboratory for examination.
“Yung pagkakahuli sa mga mga suspek ay batay sa pinaigting na kampanya ng ZCIDT na kilala bilang “Oplan Kalikasan”, said Peñones.
Suspects are now facing charges for violating section 88 of RA 8550 or illegal fishing with the used of cyanide.
