Pioneer dentist, local Rotary club founder dies

    ANGELES CITY – Dr. Carmelo S. Narciso, the founder of the Angeles City Dental Society and pioneer of the Rotary Club here, succumbed to cardio respiratory arrest at the AUF Medical Center on Tuesday, August 16. He was 80.

    A dentist by profession, Dr. Narciso was considered the father of the Rotary Club of Angeles City after he established the local chapter in 1965. He was also a pioneer of the Angeles Dental Society which he organized.

    Dr. Narciso was born on July 16, 1931. He earned his degree in Dentistry at the University of the East in 1952.

    He passed the Dental Board the following year.

    In 1992, the University of the East recognized Dr. Narciso as its “Distinguished Alumnus in The Profession of Dentistry.”

    In 1971, he organized the Angeles City Dental Society and became its Charter President. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Dental Association and its Comelec Chairman for a number of years in the ‘80s and 90’s.

    He was considered the father of the Rotary Club of Angeles which was Chartered on April 9, 1965. He became president of the club in 1979-80 and later as District Governor of D3790 in 1991-92.

    When he was district governor of D3790, he established the Rotary Club of Angeles Skills Training Center at the Holy Angel Village on a lot loaned by Peter G. Nepomuceno of the Angeles Electric Corp.

    The Skills Training Center provided livelihood training to more than 20,000 victims of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.

    Dr. Narciso also became a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Holy Sepulcher Council No. 4278 Angeles City in 1975-76.

    His favorite charities include the Bahay Pag-Ibig, a home for the abandoned elderly; and Munting Tahanan Ng Nazareth, an orphanage.

    Tourism Regional Dir. Ronaldo Tiotuico described Dr. Narciso as “an iconic figure in community welfare service” for his altruism.

    A coffee shop habitute, he frequented the Starbucks at the SM City Clark and Marquee malls.

    His remains lie in state at the Holy Mary Memorial Chapels along Rizal Avenue. Interment is scheduled on August 20, Saturday, after an 8 a.m. Holy Mass at the La Pieta Memorial Park.

    Dr. Narciso is survived by his daughters Chrystallyn and her husband Efren Tayag, Cynthia and husband Christian Cabrera, Cielo and husband Bogie Dimaranan, Cherry and husband Lee Bautista, and son Carlo and his wife Jing Narciso, and grandchildren Chad, Erin Corrine, Cyrille, Ervin Chino, Caca, Cia, Cyd, Codi, Zak and Amelia.

    Most of his children and granchildren followed in his footsteps.
