CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the City Government of Palayan in Nueva Ecija have inaugurated the Phase II of a linear park along San Lorenzo Creek, marking another step in the rehabilitation of urban waterways in Central Luzon.
Merliza Torre, head of the DENR-Nueva Ecija, reported that the 39.5-meter linear park was developed to restore and protect the San Lorenzo Creek by preserving its riparian corridor and preventing encroachment.
“The project also supports the relocation of informal settler families occupying the creek easement, reducing environmental risks while helping protect lives and property from flooding and other hazards,” Torre said.
Beyond safeguarding the waterway, the linear park transforms an environmentally vulnerable area into a green public space where residents can enjoy recreation and community activities.
DENR Region 3 executive director Ralph Pablo emphasized that protecting waterways is essential to building more livable and climate-resilient communities.
“This linear park is more than a public space. It is an investment in environmental protection and the welfare of our communities. By restoring our waterways and preserving their natural function, we strengthen flood resilience, improve water quality, and create greener spaces that future generations can benefit from,” Pablo said.
The project forms part of DENR Region 3’s continuing Manila Bay Rehabilitation Program, which promotes the rehabilitation of urban waterways through sustainable, community-centered development.
To date, 27 linear parks have been established across Central Luzon, contributing to cleaner waterways, improved flood management, and more livable communities throughout the region. DENR-3
