CLARK FREEPORT ZONE (PIA) — The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is investing in its next generation of scientists and innovators to strengthen the region’s long-term competitiveness amid rapid technological change, climate challenges, and an evolving global economy.
During the opening of the 11th ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey (APTJSO-11), ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General for the ASEAN Economic Community Satvinder Singh underscored that the region’s greatest strategic asset is its people, particularly its youth.
He noted that nearly one in three ASEAN citizens is below the age of 35, giving the region a significant advantage in developing future innovators who can lead the green transition, digital transformation, and emerging industries.
“ASEAN’s long-term competitiveness will increasingly depend on our ability to come together, to innovate, to adapt, and to develop the talent that will be capable of navigating this rapidly changing world,” Singh said.
He described programs such as APTJSO as long-term investments in the region’s future.
“Programs such as the ASEAN Plus Three Junior Science Odyssey are not simply educational activities. We see them as investments in ASEAN’s future resilience, competitiveness, and prosperity,” he said.
With this, Singh encouraged the delegates to embrace curiosity, collaboration, and responsibility as they prepare to become future scientists, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and innovators.
“You have to be curious. You have to ask the bold questions. No question is too small. You have to challenge assumptions and explore ideas beyond your comfort zone,” he told the participants.
He also reminded students that scientific breakthroughs often emerge through collaboration across disciplines, cultures, and borders, making regional cooperation essential in addressing climate change and other shared challenges.
Echoing this message, Philippine Science High School System Executive Director Ronnalee Orteza encouraged delegates to maximize opportunities for collaboration throughout the week.
“The future will not be shaped simply by the smartest people. It will be shaped by those who choose to work together,” Orteza said.
Through APTJSO-11, ASEAN seeks to cultivate a new generation of science leaders equipped with the knowledge, values, and collaborative mindset needed to sustain the region’s competitiveness and resilience in the years ahead. (CLJD/MJSC, PIA Region 3-Pampanga)
