MEANWHILE, AT the city’s other major artery, the MacArthur Highway, environmentalists are bracing to do battle with the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and, if need be, with the city government itself, over the planned cutting of 25 fully grown trees.

Last year over 100 trees were cut in the San Fernando stretch of the national road to pave the way for its widening. Massive protests from environmentalists led by the Save the Trees Coalition and the intervention of government officials, notably then Gov. Eddie Panlilio and Senator Jamby Madrigal stayed the DPWH’s chainsaw from furthering what was dubbed as the “MacArthur Massacre.”

With the cutting of those trees came the flooding of the highway, precisely where they once stood in Barangay Sindalan.

With the resumption of the widening work, 16 trees were so far cut this year and another 25 slated for the axeman.
