Relief

THEY CALLED. She responded.

Alarmed by the devastation being wrought by the El Nino phenomenon among the fisherfolk and farmers in her constituency, 4th District Rep. Anna York P. Bondoc-Sagum led her mayors in sounding the call for immediate relief, if not definitive solution.

In their petition, Bondoc-Sagum said 14,000 hectares of rice crops irrigated by the Angat-Maasim River Irrigation System are being threatened by the drought, with the water coming from the said irrigation system has been “reduced” by the National Water Resource Board.

Bondoc-Sagum feared damage to crops will reach P120 million in the district if measures are not undertaken.

On Tuesday, at the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary on the occasion of the birthday of Archbishop Paciano B. Aniceto, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was apprised by Butil partylist Rep. Agapito Guanlao of the concerns aired by Bondoc-Sagum.

Presidential action was swift. She approved some P10 million to fund the release of shallow tube wells to Pampanga farmers affected by El Niño.

“The President personally directed the Department of Agriculture to expedite the release (of the P10 million) and we could expect our farmers to receive the much needed support next week.” So said Guanlao, affirming that the DA confirmed on Tuesday too the processing and release of the shallow tube wells.

He added that some 100 units of the shallow tube wells will be released as soon as a comprehensive list of affected farmers is finalized by the DA in coordination with local officials.

Guanlao is gung-ho that the total rice produce for this planting season would be helped by the release of the shallow tube wells.

Aside from the shallow tube wells, Guanlao said he had asked the DA to study the immediate release of direct subsidy to farmers in terms of financing, livelihood or seeds, to further alleviate their sufferings from the dry spell.

The presidential action may not be that much but it sure would provide a great relief to farmers and fisherfolk.
